Firstly, let me apologize for the delay in posting this.. I have just finished my end of semester exams – and boy is that a good feeling! I’ll have a lot more time now to focus on my blog and photography work 🙂
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK
Spring’s looks appear to have stepped off the set of Star Trek. Models in the Milly NY show sashayed down the catwalk in metallic pieces in addition to designer, Michelle Smith’s signature vibrant colours and flirty fabrics.
With an audience filled with VIP guests, the Anna Sui show was guaranteed to be a spectacle!
Occupying a place in the pit meant I was an arms length away from the models.
I couldn’t contain my excitement as the pitch black room went dead silent, you could literally hear a pin drop. A light lyrical, French rendition of ‘The Loco Motion’ reverberated as the lights came up, and camera’s began to click at 100mph.
There were zany fabrics paired with statement coats and a hue of jewel colours. It was as if the designers had dived into Twiggy’s wardrobe and pulled out the most retro prints they could find, and paired them with quirky accessories. Let’s hope this is a return of the swinging 60’s!
I was lucky enough to photograph the it girl of our generation (who every teenage girl wants to be), Cara Delevingne
And her bestie – 6 ft 1 beauty, Karlie Kloss
Amongst the photographers was a flurry of talk when the show drew to a close. One shouted “Grace! Over here, Grace!” And sure enough there was the firey red-head herself!
To be quite honest with you though, I was more interested in who was seated beside her, someone I had my eye on since I walked in. BILL CUNNINGHAM. Mentor. Talent. New York icon & veteran to the fashion industry. My dream had just come true there and then. To watch this man work, was a true blessing. The 83-year-old was still snapping away for the New York Times, making me somewhat embarrassed of my own generation who complain they can’t shoot a job because it’s raining, and they might get wet. All cynicism aside, I feel as though Bill is someone we should all look up to. He’s not in this “world” for the fame. Nor is he in it for the money. He does it because he loves his craft.
I could see this as he was shooting, when he liked an outfit or shot he had taken, he would clap his hands together in a childlike manner and beam from ear to ear. And if he didn’t like something, you’d know about it too! His gentle nature was humbling, knowing how talented and irreplaceable this man truly is.
Another thing that interested me about Bill, was that he didn’t hang around too long to mix and mingle with the NY socialites and celebrities. In fact he bolted for the door as soon as the show was over. My mum who has also looked up to him since she started out as a photographer – made a quick exit, managing to have a quick chat and thank him for his inspiration.
Here is a shot our talented photographer friend, Nicole Gomes, was able to capture of the two of them:
And to conclude the eventful day, we enjoyed Mexican & Margarita’s at Rosa Mexicano with our lovely new friends from the UK!
Wow this was a long post! I have plenty more photos to share, so watch this space!
