For those who follow my blog, you may remember that I took a trip to Bali with my friend Michelle once we finished our degrees. Our final stay was in the tourism hub of Seminyak. My absolute highlight of my time there was a trip to the surf beach Canggu. Seminyak is very cosmopolitan, has a vibrant hustle and bustle of a city, lots of interesting characters, and plenty to do. Here’s a guide of what you can get up to, to make the most of your stay.

Where to eat

Crate

There’s a vibe about Crate that just made me feel so at home. After trekking for miles in the heat to satisfy my tick off the last place to visit on my Bali Bucket List, these boys welcomed me with open arms as if I was an old friend. Customers were happy, they were happy, and even the food was happy. I seriously could not fault this place one bit. The portions were hearty and very reasonably priced, the food was bursting with colour and everything they serve is 100% natural and fresh.
@oliviaroundtown: Found the hippest little cafe in the middle of nowhere on a dusty stretch of road in Canggu. Such good vibes. Best smoothie of my life - no bells and whistles and ingredients I can't pronounce, just fresh fruit and made with love. Also had a laugh with the super lovely boys who made it for me, who told us all their favourite party spots (which turned out to be great) thanks guys! CRATE is a must visit in Bali ✈️ #bali #tidaktaxis #soundschill #zaaad @michelleylu

Just one spectacular vegetarian lunch from Crate. Mushroom, roast veges and feta wraps (two for $6NZL)
Michelle and I shared the Feta, chilli, tempe and tofu wrap (two for $3.50 NZL) which was very generous and filling, and I had the Two Timer smoothie made with greens and dragon fruit ($4 NZL) // We also shared an iced latte which was basically like espresso ice cream (absolutely amazing).

Sisterfields

@oliviaroundtown: Had to have the Bali blogger experience and check into Sisterfields... Food not as amazing as imagined, but super cute little cafe and great for people watching (there was a Harley gang drinking pink berry smoothies and eating floral adorned granola while we were there 🌸😂) #bali #tidaktaxis #soundschill #zaaad ✈️🌴

What to do

1. Visit Old Man’s in Canggu

The famous Old Mans – don't leave seminyak without checking out this place. It's a huge open plan lounge bar and chippy – but traditionally know for their beautiful blue murals.

During our travels Michelle and I decided to come up with our own kiwi slang. We would drop the word "zad" into conversations when we thought something was cool - and this was the hand symbol. Next thing we knew, our foreign friends had caught on, and we felt like quite the trend setters!

2. Swim at Canggu beach

Gorgeous kids playing in the sand dunes. I stopped to chat to them after they were pointing at me and whispering in Balinese and their faces absolutely lit up. They seemed to be intrigued by my difference. They also offered me to join them playing football in the creek, but we had to make it to the beach before the sun went down. Next time I'll definitely take them up on the offer!

Sandy knees and wavy seas
Sandy knees and wavy seas ~ while we were there we got bombarded by lovely ladies wanting to sell us bracelets and sarongs. They were so delightful, and one lady in particular had us in fits of laughter as she told us in her broken english about her 14 boyfriends in different countries across the world and how she dates them remotely to avoid drama.

3. Stay somewhere classy and listen to music / relax in the pool

Enjoy the hotel pool

4. Go out dancing to La Favela or Ninja (La Favela is the raddest club – it has different hang-out sections for all the different social personalities with a variation of music styles).

5. Explore the shops

The squeals of delight and laughter as these kids ran after their dog made me so happy. It will be my goal to never lose that inherent childlike fun we all have amongst our worldly, "high and mighty" adult facades. Because really all we are is children in bigger bodies with more cynicism and less naivety. #balimusings ✈️

So that’s Seminyak in a nutshell really, I would definitely recommend the visit, but spread your time amongst other less tourist filled places as well (such as the Gilis, Uluwatu, Ubud etc.) – so that concludes my Bali adventure. Next stop, Melbourne!

Selamat malam,

Liv xoxo
